1,015 Stone Steps to the Inner Sanctum: Climbing the Ancient Temple Founded by Jikaku Daishi

About this spot

A Tendai Buddhist temple said to have been founded by Jikaku Daishi Ennin in 860, commonly known as Yamadera (山寺), it is a leading spiritual place in northeastern Japan. The Konponchudo Hall (根本中堂), designated as an Important Cultural Property and among Japan's oldest wooden structures made of beech, still houses the "Eternal Dharma Lamp" brought from Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei. From the mountain gate to the Inner Sanctum, there are 1,015 stone steps. Semizuka (蝉塚), a burial mound for prayer tablets inscribed with Basho's verses, the Midadо (弥陀洞) where weathering has revealed the figure of Amida Buddha in the rock face, and the beautifully crafted Niomon Gate (仁王門) of zelkova wood appear one after another—making the long climb feel less like a burden. As you ascend step by step along this pilgrimage path, where each step is said to dispel worldly desires through ascetic practice, encourage one another and experience the path beneath your own feet.

Tips

From JR Senzan Line's Yamadera Station (山寺駅), it's about a 10-minute walk to the mountain gate. The pilgrimage fee is 300 yen for adults; allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the round-trip climb. The steps can be slippery after rain, so wear sturdy shoes. Bring water from the base before starting your ascent.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours required. It's recommended to start early in the morning when there are fewer crowds and the air is crisp, offering a better climbing experience.
