The Yamadera's Most Spectacular Panorama: A Stage-Built Hall Jutting Over a Cliff

A hall built in stage-style architecture projecting over a cliff, dedicated to the Five Great Wisdom Kings and serving as a place to pray for national peace. It is known as Yamadera's premier viewing spot. Standing on the stage, you'll see the houses of the temple town below and the Tachiyadani River (立谷川) flowing beneath, with the Ou mountain range (奥羽の山並み) stretching endlessly to the horizon. Combined with the sense of achievement from climbing all 1,015 steps, this unforgettable vista awaits. Just nearby, atop Hyakujōgan Rock (百丈岩), the Kaisando Hall (開山堂) dedicated to Jikaku Daishi and the small red Shoro Pagoda (納経堂)—said to be the oldest building in the temple complex—stand close together. The landscape created by these structures perched on the cliff epitomizes Yamadera. Photography enthusiasts shouldn't miss either the grand vista from the stage or the temple buildings arrayed along the cliff face.
Tips
Reached via a fork in the path near the Kaisando Hall while ascending the steps toward the Okunoin. Viewing is included in Rissyakuji's pilgrimage fee with no additional charge. The stage can become crowded, so be courteous when taking photos. Mind your footing and avoid leaning beyond the railings.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. The air is clearest in the morning, offering pristine visibility and excellent photography conditions.
