The protective shrine of the entire Yamadera temple complex, located right beside the Konponchudo Hall. According to tradition, when Jikaku Daishi founded Rissyakuji, he enshrined the protective deity from Hiyoshi Taisha (日吉大社) at the foot of Mount Hiei. The shrine has walked alongside the mountain for over a thousand years. In the shrine grounds stands a massive ginkgo tree said to have been planted by Jikaku Daishi himself; its imposing trunk speaks to the passage of eons. Visiting before and after the stone steps is the traditional way to honor Yamadera—making it an essential stop for those who enjoy power spots. Paying respects at both this shrine and the Konponchudo Hall deepens your understanding of Yamadera's unique spiritual world where temple and shrine stand side by side.
Tips
Located right beside the Konponchudo Hall just inside the main gate, with free access for viewing. Calligraphy seals (goshuin) are available upon request at the shrine office (note: staff may not always be present, so allow extra time). You can stop by both before climbing the steps and after descending, making it conveniently situated either way.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes required. For a thank-you visit after descent, late afternoon is ideal; for experiencing the quiet stillness, early morning is best.
