About this spot

This is one of Takahata's most spectacular scenic spots, created by opening a former quarry of Takahata stone that has been in operation since the Taisho period. The pale yellowish-hued tuff stone known as Takahata stone was historically used widely in the construction of the old Takahata Station building, local storehouses, and fences, and the cutting marks from extraction remain as vertical rock faces tens of meters high. Standing in the plaza surrounded by rock walls creates the surreal sensation of wandering into a colossal stone temple. The linear rock faces carved by human hands over many years are awe-inspiring—you must experience their true scale in person; photographs alone cannot convey it. The excellent acoustics make it a popular venue for concerts and other events, and it's gaining popularity as an Instagram-worthy spot among those in the know. As you conclude your full day of exploration, take a moment to appreciate the passage of time alongside the lingering memories of wine.

Tips

Approximately 10 minutes by car from Michi no Eki Takahata, with free parking available. Admission is free. The areas between rock walls become dark and difficult to navigate as evening falls, so daytime visits are recommended. The ground is gravelly and rocky, so sneakers are advisable. Do not approach areas marked with rockfall warnings.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon's raking sunlight creates dramatic shadows on the rock faces, making it the most photogenic time. Visit before dark.
