The Ura-Bandai Visitor Center serves as the information hub for Bandai-Asahi National Park, presenting the formation and highlights of Ura-Bandai in an easily understandable manner. Inside, the dramatic 1888 eruption of Bandai Mountain—which collapsed the mountainside, dammed rivers, and created hundreds of lakes and ponds—is traced through models, videos, and photo panels. The center also features extensive exhibits explaining why the water in each of the Five-Color Lakes displays a different color, and the flora and fauna that inhabit Ura-Bandai. The experience of discovering the "why" behind the spectacular views you just witnessed at Bishamonnu Lake is delightful. Current seasonal nature information and exploration trail conditions are also available, making it a reliable rest stop for planning your afternoon activities. The free admission is an added bonus.
Tips
Located just steps from the Goshiki-numa entrance and within walking distance from Bishamonnu Lake. Admission is free. Some periods have Tuesday closures, so it's wise to check operating days in advance. It's recommended to check current trail conditions and bear activity information before hiking.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Visiting after Bishamonnu Lake deepens your understanding of the exhibits. Late morning hours tend to be quieter.
