Gongen-zukuri Shrine Building with Vivid Carvings Beyond the Cedar-Lined Pilgrimage Path
About this spot
This shrine was founded when the first lord of Tottori Domain, Ikeda Mitsushige, made a religious transfer from the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The main hall, sanctuary building, worship hall, and Chinese gate are all designated Important Cultural Properties. Situated in a deep green valley called Ouchi, you can walk along the cedar-lined pilgrimage path while listening to a small stream's murmur, surrounded by a quietness that belies its proximity to the city center. The Gongen-zukuri shrine buildings feature magnificent carvings, with the craftsmen's skill evident in every detail. The shrine is also known as a site connected to the Inaba region's traditional Kirin-jishi lion dance, preserving the religious history of Tottori Castle Town. The surrounding Ouchi Park is a pleasant retreat with beautiful seasonal colors.
Tips
Parking spaces are available at the Ouchi Park entrance. It's about a 15-minute walk from Tottori Castle ruins; the walk itself offers pleasant views of the castle town. The shaded pilgrimage path remains cool even in summer, though stone pavements can be slippery after rain, so watch your footing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Morning light filtering through the tree canopy in the early hours creates a refreshingly clear atmosphere along the path.
