Enjoy Matcha Tea While Viewing the Nationally Designated Scenic Pond Garden from the Parlor

About this spot

Kannonji Temple, an ancient Tendai Buddhist temple, flourished as the prayer temple of the Ikeda clan, lords of Tottori Domain. The garden viewed from the main hall's parlor is designated as a nationally scenic site and is renowned as a fine example of pond-centered landscape appreciation design, featuring a central pond with artificial hills, lawns, and stone arrangements. Visitors sit in the parlor and savor matcha tea and dried confections while contemplating the garden at leisure—a unique charm that sets this temple apart. Spending time gazing at the changing green foliage with the seasons and the sky's colors reflected in the water's surface is the true essence of a castle town walk. It offers a quiet, luxurious experience unavailable in rushed tourism.

Tips

The admission fee includes matcha tea and dried confections. Since you remove shoes at the entrance to sit in the parlor, wear easily removable footwear. A small parking area is available near the gate. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, as you'll be sitting on tatami mats.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Midday and early afternoon light reaches the parlor, making the garden's green most vibrant.
