Hand-Shape Tofu Chikuwa Experience: Wrap Paste Around Bamboo

About this spot

Tofu chikuwa is a traditional food from the Inaba region of eastern Tottori Prefecture, made by steaming a mixture of tofu and white fish paste. Legend has it that an economical feudal lord once recommended using tofu as a substitute for expensive fish, starting this culinary tradition. At Tofu Chikuwa no Sato, operated by the established kamaboko shop Chimura, visitors can participate in a hand-shaping experience under the guidance of skilled craftsmen, wrapping paste around bamboo sticks and enjoying freshly grilled chikuwa—the best part of the experience. The shop's sales floor carries everything from classic tofu chikuwa to unique processed fish products, and their fluffy texture and gentle sweetness of tofu are sure to change your perception of chikuwa entirely.

Tips

The hand-shaping experience has specific operating dates and capacity limits, so advance reservation is recommended. It's about a 20-minute drive from downtown Tottori. Since tofu chikuwa requires refrigeration, bring a cooler bag if you plan to carry it with you.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. An early afternoon experience slot fits naturally with the morning's food walking.
