Silver Mine Exploration: Walk the Hand-Carved Mineshaft Marked with Chisel Impressions

Among the hundreds of mineshafts (mabu) said to exist in Iwami Ginzan, this is a rare shaft open to the public on a regular basis. The total length exceeds 600 meters, with accessible sections for viewing. Upon entering, you'll be struck by the cool temperature difference, and the walls and ceiling are densely marked with chisel impressions from hand-mining. Small side tunnels branching off show the paths miners followed in pursuit of ore veins, conveying the rigorous work of miners who labored while crouching. Near the exit, illuminated panels display picture scrolls depicting mining scenes, connecting your mineshaft experience with knowledge. This is truly the core of the UNESCO World Heritage site Iwami Ginzan, where you can feel history through your body.
Tips
After traveling by bus from the World Heritage Center to the Omori district, the walk along the scenic trail to the mineshaft takes approximately 45 minutes. Renting a bicycle makes the journey easier. The interior remains cool year-round, so bring a light layer. Be mindful of low ceilings in some areas.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (including the scenic trail walk). Early morning offers fewer tour groups, allowing quiet appreciation of the mineshaft.
