This ancient temple stands beside the Ginzan River, with approximately 500 rakan (arhat) statues enshrined in three stone caves carved into the rock face across the water. According to tradition, these rakan statues were carved over many years to console the spirits of miners who died in the silver mines. Each statue displays a different expression—some laughing, some weeping, some in conversation—and it is said that "you will always find a face resembling a departed loved one." You reach the caves by crossing a beautifully constructed arch bridge built from local stone, which itself is well worth viewing. Touching upon the prayers of those who lived in the shadows of the silver mine's prosperity, this is a fitting place to quietly conclude your day of world heritage walking.
Tips
Admission is arranged at the temple office before the bridge. The stone surface in front of the caves can be slippery, so take care. Since each rakan statue has a unique expression, plan time for careful viewing of each one.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. In the late afternoon, western sunlight softly illuminates the stone caves, bringing out the depth of expression in the rakan statues.
