This tea room was built according to the tastes of Matsudaira Harukata (Fumai), the seventh lord of Matsue Domain and a renowned master of tea ceremony. With its thatched roof bearing a plaque in Fumai's own hand, it embodies unpretentious refinement. After relocations within the city, the tea room now rests peacefully on a hill overlooking Matsue Castle. Reached by climbing stone steps from the Shiomizunawate samurai residence street, it is approached through a garden of stepping stones and moss that invites you into the serene world of tea ceremony. At Hyakusōtei, located within the grounds, you can enjoy matcha and seasonal confections while gazing at the garden, allowing you to experience firsthand the tea culture favored by Fumai that has taken root in Matsue, all in the quiet of early morning.
Tips
Parking spaces around Shiomizunawate are limited, so it is most reliable to park at Matsue Castle Ōtemon Parking Lot and walk. Since you must remove your shoes to enter the tea room, wearing shoes that are easy to slip on and off, along with clean socks, is advisable.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Early morning, right after opening, offers the quietest garden and allows you to leisurely savor the tea room's atmosphere.
