Spectacular View from the Tatami Room Praised as "the Finest Scenery in Japan"
About this spot
Taishōrō Tower, the guest hall adjacent to the main hall of Fukuzenji Temple, is a spectacular viewpoint representing Tomo no Ura. Entering the tatami room, the pillars and transoms frame the sea like a picture frame, and before your eyes spread Benten Island and Sengyoku Island like a single brushwork painting. During the Edo period, it became a reception hall for Korean envoys, and one envoy famously praised this view as "Nittō Daiichi Keshō" (the finest scenery in Japan). Sitting on the tatami in the open tatami room—without window glass or partitions—and slowly gazing at the sea is a luxurious moment befitting the start of a Tomo no Ura date.
Tips
The streets of Tomo no Ura are narrow, so park at the tourist parking lot at the town entrance and explore on foot. Climb stone steps to reach Taishōrō and remove your shoes before entering the tatami room. Early morning hours have few visitors, allowing you to enjoy the spectacular view in quiet solitude.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. In the morning, light bathes the sea and Sengyoku Island stands out clearly; the tatami room is quiet and ideal for photography.
