A Pilgrimage of 785 Stone Steps with a View of Mount Sanuki from the Observation Platform

About this spot

Known affectionately as 'Konpira-san,' this is the principal shrine among all Kotohira shrines nationwide dedicated to the deity of the sea. From the approach entrance to the Main Shrine stretches a flight of 785 stone steps, flanked by souvenir shops on both sides, while the large umbrellas of five selected merchants specially permitted to sell candy within the shrine grounds heighten the sense of pilgrimage. Passing through notable points such as the Grand Gate, the Study Hall, and the Asahi Shrine, once you reach the observation platform beside the Main Shrine, you'll enjoy a panoramic view of the Sanuki Plain and the cone-shaped Mount Sanuki (Iino-san). The votive plaques at the hall dedicated to maritime safety are also impressive. If you have the energy, extending your visit further to the Inner Shrine and Genrei Shrine, where the stone steps continue, is also recommended.

Tips

Walking sticks can be borrowed from shops along the approach (buying a souvenir from the shop where you borrowed is customary courtesy). Keep luggage to a minimum and use a backpack that leaves both hands free. After rain, the stone steps become slippery, so watch your footing carefully, and prepare your drinks before you start climbing.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2.5 hours required. Starting your ascent during the cool morning hours allows you to complete your pilgrimage before crowds become heavy.
