The Polka-Dotted Pumpkin at the Port: A Must-Visit Couple's Photo Spot
About this spot
A giant red polka-dotted pumpkin sculpture welcomes travelers at the pier of Miyaura Port (宮浦港), the gateway to Naoshima. One of the island's iconic outdoor artworks, the interior is hollow, and you can enter through the carved-out polka dots to gaze out at the sea. Against the backdrop of the blue Seto Inland Sea with ferries crossing back and forth and green island silhouettes, every angle is photogenic. Located immediately after disembarking the ferry, it's customary to start your day on the art island here. A couple's photo together will instantly build anticipation for the journey.
Tips
You can stop here immediately after arriving by ferry. Miyaura Port Terminal has coin lockers, so you can store large luggage and walk freely. As a popular photo spot, the timing right after the morning arrival is relatively uncrowded and best for photography.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. In the morning, backlit conditions capture the sea and the pumpkin's red vividly.
