An art museum constructed with most of its building embedded underground to preserve the Seto Inland Sea landscape. Designed by Tadao Ando (安藤忠雄), the architecture itself is a work of art. In the underground space where natural light streams down, you can view Claude Monet's series of water lilies, James Turrell's light installations, and Walter De Maria's massive installation. The greatest charm is how the artworks' appearance changes constantly with time and weather—each visit to the same room offers a different experience. Tips
Tickets are typically reserved online in advance, so secure yours early once your itinerary is set. Photography is not allowed inside; plan for about 2 hours for viewing. From Miyaura Port, access via the town bus and area shuttle. There are slopes, so wear comfortable shoes.
