Old Folk House × Concrete: A Small Museum Condensing an Architect's World

About this spot

A small museum in the Honmura (本村) district, where the old townscape is preserved, housed in a renovated wooden folk house. The exterior is a nostalgic traditional house with a tile roof, but stepping inside reveals a space of exposed concrete where wood and concrete, light and darkness resonate together, offering a surprising architectural experience. The museum introduces the activities, models, and sketches of Tadao Ando, who has designed many buildings on Naoshima, allowing you to deepen your understanding of the museums you've visited throughout the day. The surrounding alleyways are dotted with House Project artworks, and the walk through the area while gazing at cafes and traditional house noren curtains is a highlight of the journey.

Tips

The Honmura district has narrow alleyways, so a leisurely walk is recommended. If time permits, combine your visit with appreciation of the House Project artworks scattered nearby. Some areas inside don't allow photography; follow staff guidance.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes. The soft afternoon light is pleasant for alleyway walks.
