Experience Kagawa's History and Art at Takamatsu Castle Ruins

About this spot

This museum combines the functions of a history museum and art museum, located adjacent to Takamatsu Castle ruins and Tamamo Park. In the history exhibition hall, you can trace Kagawa's development from prehistoric times to the modern era through original artifacts and reconstructed models. The displays featuring Kobo Daishi Kukai, born in Sanuki, and the art and crafts treasures passed down through the Takamatsu Matsudaira clan are must-sees. The art section features special exhibitions centered on artists connected to Kagawa. The free costume experience corner, where you can try on twelve-layered court robes (junihitoe) and samurai armor, is popular with both children and adults, making this a reliable ally for rainy-day sightseeing in Takamatsu, offering both appreciation and hands-on fun.

Tips

There is paid parking in the basement of the museum, but since it's within walking distance from Takamatsu Station, we recommend combining it with a walking tour of the city. Mondays are typically closed, so check the opening dates in advance. Visit the costume experience area in the morning before it gets crowded.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The exhibition rooms are quieter right after opening in the morning, and you can enjoy the experience corner at a leisurely pace.
