Contemporary Art and Kagawa Lacquerware Near the Shopping Arcade
About this spot
Located just steps from the Marugame shopping arcade in central Takamatsu, this museum's collection pillars are 'postwar Japanese contemporary art,' 'Kagawa's lacquerware and traditional crafts,' and '20th-century and beyond world art.' The lacquerware treasures that Sanuki is proud of—with their glossy finishes and delicate carved details—are particularly worthwhile to view closely through the glass. The bright, open entrance hall and the museum shop with its selection of art books create a welcoming atmosphere, and its accessible location near shops makes it easy to drop by while browsing. After plenty of active play at the Toy Museum, taking time in the quiet exhibition rooms to center yourself feels just right.
Tips
The permanent collection exhibition is reasonably priced, while special exhibitions have separate admission fees. You can access the museum without getting wet by walking through the shopping arcade's covered passage. The building is air-conditioned, so bringing a light layer is comfortable.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Late afternoon visits are quieter, allowing you to savor the exhibitions peacefully.
