A Grand 7-Minute Aerial Ride in a 101-Passenger Gondola
About this spot
One of Shikoku's largest ropeway systems, this facility rapidly ascends approximately 2,600 meters in total length with a 660-meter elevation gain to the summit of Unhenji Mountain, which towers on the border between Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures. The 101-passenger large gondola climbs at a speed of 10 meters per second, and during the approximately 7-minute ride, the cityscape of Kanonji and the Sanuki Plain spread beneath you, with islands of the Seto Inland Sea layering into the distance beyond. The exhilaration of watching the scenery grow smaller and more distant with each glance back is exactly like a journey through the sky—if you love riding experiences, your heart will race throughout the ascent. As the gondola crosses the prefectural border from Kagawa to Tokushima mid-air, crossing the border while suspended in the sky is a unique experience only this ropeway offers.
Tips
Free parking available at the base station. Gondolas typically depart at approximately 20-minute intervals, so allow extra time. The summit is noticeably cooler than the base, so bring a light jacket. For the best view of the Sanuki Plain during the ascent, stand on the rear side of the gondola in the direction of travel.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes required (one-way ride is approximately 7 minutes). On clear mornings, the island shadows in the Seto Inland Sea are distinctly visible.
