A market known as "Hakata's Kitchen," with a long narrow covered arcade extending from the foot of Yanagibashi Bridge (柳橋) that spans the Naka River (那珂川). With approximately 100 years of history, small independent shops line the arcade shoulder to shoulder—fresh fish vendors, produce shops, fish cake and mentaiko stores. Since professional chefs also come here to source ingredients, the freshness of fish from the Genkai Sea (玄界灘) is guaranteed. Whether you're sampling fish cakes at shop fronts or carefully selecting loose mentaiko, you'll sense the depth of Hakata's culinary foundation with every step. The unpretentious, living-rooted atmosphere—not a tourist-oriented creation—is the real treasure. We recommend visiting during the lively morning hours when vendors' calls ring out loudest.
Tips
Note that many shops are closed on Sundays and holidays. Activity peaks from morning through early afternoon, with shops closing early in the evening. The narrow passages mean large luggage is best avoided; keep fresh purchases in a cool bag. Some individual shops accept cash only.

Allow approximately 1 hour. Mid-morning, when shops are in full swing and bustling with energy, is ideal for a market walk.
