Scenic Promenade Overlooking the Whirlpools of Ariyoshose

Ariyoshose (針尾瀬戸), the strait lying between Sasebo and Seikai cities, is renowned for its swift tidal currents and is counted among Japan's three greatest tidal currents. The red arch Seikaibashi (西海橋) that spans this strait was called "the finest in the Orient" when completed, and its graceful arc high above the water is a sight to behold. From the observation plaza in Seikaibashi Park (西海橋公園) on both sides of the bridge, you can gaze down upon whirlpools created on the sea's surface with the rise and fall of tides. During spring tides, you may witness a dramatic spectacle of large and small whirlpools appearing and disappearing in succession. Stroll leisurely through the park, also beloved as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, and capture the strait's stunning scenery in your photographs.

Tips

Whirlpools appear in sync with tidal cycles, so check tide tables in advance and aim for times just before or after high and low tides during spring tides. The observation plaza has limited shade, so a hat is recommended. The strait's coastline often experiences strong winds, so watch out for items that could blow away.
