A Stroll Above the Sea - Viewing Whirlpools from Directly Below
About this spot
The New Seikaibashi (新西海橋) stands right next to Seikaibashi (西海橋) and features an unusual two-tier structure with a pedestrian-only promenade beneath the roadway. The promenade is free to traverse and offers the sensation of walking straight across the strait—truly "a stroll above the sea." Glass viewing windows set into the floor midway allow you to gaze directly down at the swirling tidal currents of Ariyoshose (針尾瀬戸), providing both a thrilling sense of vertigo and spectacular views. Glancing out the windows reveals the red arch of Seikaibashi (西海橋), passing vessels, and across the strait, three massive radio towers of the former Sasebo Wireless Telegraph Station (Ariyoshi Transmitter) (旧佐世保無線電信所), a nationally designated important cultural property. This bridge, where encounters reveal views unavailable to those passing by in vehicles, is a fitting finale to the whirlpool tour.
Tips
The promenade experiences strong winds over the sea, so secure your hat firmly to prevent loss. The glass floor in the viewing windows may be thrilling for those with a fear of heights; if uncomfortable, simply walk along the handrail side. You can walk the promenade in both directions starting from Seikaibashi Park (西海橋公園).
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes required. Combined with Seikaibashi Park (西海橋公園), it is best to cross during times of swift tidal currents.
