The Finest Observation Point on the Outer Rim—Panoramic Views of the Caldera and Five Peaks
About this spot
The most celebrated observation point on the north side of the Aso Caldera and the outer rim. Below spreads a vast caldera plain dotted with paddies; beyond them rise the five peaks of Aso—Negoe, Takadake, Nakadake, Eboshidake, and Kishimadake—whose ridgeline is said to resemble the sleeping form of Buddha, earning it the name 'Aso Nirvana Buddha.' Turn around and you can see all the way to the Kuju mountain range—a true panorama worthy of being called the finest view on the outer rim. Legend has it the name was given by the writer and cultural figure Tokutomi Soho. On clear mornings when the air is especially crisp, the ridgeline of the five peaks stands out sharply; and if conditions align, you may even encounter the fantastical sight of sea clouds enveloping the entire caldera. The spot has a souvenir shop and tea house, making it a fitting starting point for an Aso scenic drive adventure.
Tips
There is a gentle uphill walk from the parking area to the observation point. The elevation is high, and on windy days, it can feel chilly even in summer, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea. To catch the sea clouds, early morning when the air is clearest is your best bet—but be prepared for the cold with warm clothing. Well-paved paths and railings make the walk easy.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Early morning hours offer the clearest skies and the sharpest ridgelines of the five peaks—highly recommended.
