Learn the Volcanic Story of Aso Through Live Crater Footage

About this spot

A museum that stands right before Kusasenri-ga-hama and offers comprehensive learning about Aso's volcanoes and natural environment. The main attraction is live footage transmitted from a camera installed on the crater wall of Nakadake (中岳). Even on days when access to the crater is restricted, you can observe the crater's current state up close on the monitor. A large-screen theater presents dynamic footage on the formation of the caldera, Aso through the four seasons, and the relationship between grassland and human life. Exhibitions thoroughly explain volcanic mechanisms, and as you watch, all the 'whys' behind the spectacular views you've seen throughout the day will be answered. A visit here after your drive will deepen and enrich your appreciation of Aso's landscape.

Tips

Viewing of the Nakadake crater may be restricted depending on volcanic activity; if you wish to approach the crater, check the day's restrictions on-site or via the official website. The indoor museum is unaffected by weather, making it useful as a backup activity if mountain weather deteriorates.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Visiting in the afternoon after finishing your Kusasenri hike, to review the day's spectacular views through video, is recommended.
