Circling the Red-Tiled Hamlet with Sanshin Music and Water Buffalo Carts

About this spot

The departure point for Taketomi Island's signature water buffalo cart experience. A massive water buffalo slowly pulls the cart through the approximately 30-minute scenic route past red-tiled homes, coral stone walls, and white sandy paths. The settlement is designated as a National Important Traditional Building Preservation District, with uniquely expressive Shisa lions adorning each rooftop. As the guide narrates island life stories, traditional sanshin melodies and island folk songs fill the air, enveloping the cart in warmth. The landscape drifts by slower than walking pace, synchronized with the water buffalo's unhurried gait. This experience—immersing yourself completely in Taketomi Island's island time—is the highlight of this course.

Tips

While you can board on the day, the high season may have waits; advance reservations are recommended. A shuttle bus connects the port and hamlet. The white sandy paths are maintained daily by residents—respect their living space and avoid stepping on private property.
