An ancient pier extending straight into the emerald waters from the western edge of the hamlet. Historically, boats once departed from here as islanders traveled to nearby Iriomote Island (西表島) to tend to their fields. Today it stands as a registered tangible cultural property. Walking to its tip reveals transparent shallow waters alive with fish silhouettes below, while the red-tiled hamlet and verdant trees command your view in reverse. The vista of endless Yaeyama sea and sky is a perfect crescendo to your day. Sitting on the weathered wooden planks and listening to the waves may just encapsulate the finest afterglow of your Taketomi Island journey. Known especially for its spectacular sunset views.
Tips
The pier lacks railings—keep close watch on young children near the end. The surface can be slippery when wet from wave splash; watch your footing. Calculate return ferry timing carefully to allow ample time to reach the port.
