Walking food stalls and temple approach exploration: kusadango, senbei, and other downtown specialties

About this spot

The stone-paved approach extends approximately 200 meters from Shibamata Station to the temple gate, lined with established shops over 100 years old. Kusadango is the signature specialty of the Katsushika area and the crown jewel of the approach—tender green mugwort dumplings topped with sweet red bean paste. Freshly baked senbei, tsukudani (small fish preserves), eel restaurants, and other old-time favorites line the street, making it enjoyable just to walk and browse. The evening of the fireworks festival will be extremely crowded, so enjoy your food strolls during this time. Consider purchasing souvenirs early and storing luggage in station coin lockers so you can move about freely.

Fireworks details

Name:

Date & time: 7/28 (Tue) 19:20–20:20

Venue:

Shells: approx. 20,000

Tips

Tips

Just a short walk from Shibamata Station. Shops on the approach are open from late morning. Kusadango is best eaten the same day; if taking it with you, a cooler bag is recommended. The temple approach and surroundings will be extremely crowded from late afternoon on fireworks day, so check your route in advance.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes required. Early afternoon is less crowded than evening, making it an ideal time for leisurely food strolling.
