Himeji Castle (姫路城), a National Treasure registered in 1993 as Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage site. The main tower complex with white plastered walls, known by the alternate name "Hakuro Castle" (White Heron Castle), is the largest of all existing original castle towers in Japan. The view of the Great Tenshu rising from Sanno-maru Plaza is magnificent no matter how many times you visit, and from the topmost floor inside the tower, you can see across Himeji city all the way to Harima-nada. If you note the direction of the harbor where the fireworks will rise tonight during the daytime, the story of your day comes together. Constructed approximately 400 years ago and having survived even the Meiji-era castle abolishment order, take time to leisurely explore this grand fortification.

姫路みなと祭のクライマックスを飾る海上花火大会です。播磨灘の沖合の台船から打ち上げられる10,000発超の花火は、遮るものない海の上空に大きく開き、煙が潮風に流れるたびに次々と鮮明な大輪が咲きます。スターマインや尺玉など多彩な演目が約1時間10分にわたって続き、海面に映る光の帯が二重の美しさを演出。フィナーレの連続打ちが港全体を照らし上げる瞬間は、10,000発という規模ならではの圧倒的な迫力です。播磨の海と秋の夜空が一体となるこの花火大会は、姫路の夏の締めくくりにふさわしい風物詩です。
Tips
荒天時の開催可否は大会公式および姫路市の発表で必ず確認を。終了後は飾磨駅・山陽電鉄が大混雑するため、フィナーレ後は港で少し余韻を楽しんでから分散して帰宅するのがおすすめ。姫路駅方面へのシャトルバスや臨時増発の有無は当日の案内を確認してください。帰り道は足元が暗いのでライトを活用しましょう。

About 20 minutes on foot from JR Himeji Station or Sanyo Himeji Station, or by bus to the Great Gate area. Admission: ¥1,050 for adults (Himeji Castle only). The interior features many steep wooden stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Compared to the crowded summer, late September offers a relatively calm atmosphere. Direct access to nearby Koko-en is available from the castle's Western Citadel entrance.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours required. The white walls shine most brilliantly in afternoon light.
