An ancient shrine of outstanding prestige in the Kanto region, dedicated to the deity Amatsu Minakanushi Omikoto. According to tradition, it was founded in the age of gods, and has long been revered as the Shimosa Province's foremost shrine by samurai and common people alike. The cedar-lined approach leading from the main gate offers deep shade even in midsummer, creating a refreshing atmosphere even before worship. Passing through the crimson-lacquered ceremonial gate reveals the solemn main hall, where you can feel the more than thousand-year history rooted in Katori's Suigo lands. Throughout the grounds you'll find points of interest including a treasure hall, the sacred stone of Kaname (要石), and inner shrine, easily explored in about an hour. About 20 minutes on foot from Katori Station, or about 10 minutes by taxi from Sawara Station. The grounds are free to visit. Admission to the treasure hall is charged, so plan according to your time and interests. Tea houses and souvenir shops line the approach. Don't forget sun protection during the daytime heat in summer.

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The cedar-lined approach stays cool even during the day, making an early afternoon visit ideal.
