Panoramic Views from the Keep and Popular Photo Ops with Hospitality Ninjas
About this spot
The symbol of Wakayama City, known as the castle seat of the Kii Tokugawa family, one of the Tokugawa Gosanke (three collateral branches), with 555,000 koku in domain. Ascending the keep atop Tiger-Lying Mountain (虎伏山) offers sweeping views of the Wakayama cityscape, the Kino River, and the distant sea. The castle features many attractions including stone walls with different masonry techniques from different periods and the rare restored Ohashi-roka (御橋廊下), an arched corridor that diagonally spans the moat. The spacious grounds, developed as Wakayama Park (和歌山公園), offer free entry and include a small petting zoo where families with young children can spend plenty of time. If you encounter the "hospitality ninja" tour guide, you'll enjoy memorable photos and fun ninja poses. History enthusiasts and active children alike will find their own way to enjoy this castle.
Tips
About 10 minutes by bus from JR Wakayama Station (get off at 'Koen-mae' stop), or about a 10-minute walk from Nankai Wakayama City Station. Paid municipal parking is available. Stone steps lead all the way up to the keep, so carrying young children in a baby carrier is recommended. Pushing a stroller up is challenging, so traveling light is best. Entry to the keep requires a ticket (¥410 for adults). Bring water for hydration, especially in summer when the uphill climb causes perspiration.
Best time to visit
About 1.5 hours. Climbing early in the cool morning hours offers the clearest views from the keep.
