View the majestic Pacific panorama from an observation deck perched on a 50-meter cliff

About this spot

Shirahama's signature scenic spot, featuring dramatic cliffs approximately 50 meters high extending for roughly 2 kilometers north and south. From the observation deck, you can enjoy for free the powerful sight of waves crashing against rugged rock faces and a vast Pacific panorama stretching to the horizon. Below the cliff lies the Sandangiwa Cavern, with a legend that the Kumano Navy once hid ships here. You can descend 36 meters underground by elevator for a paid tour to see waves surging into the cavern up close. As dusk approaches, the horizon glows with soft crimson, creating a dramatic scene perfect for ending your day. This is a spot where families can experience the grandeur of nature.

Tips

About 3 minutes by drive from Senjojiki; there is a free parking lot. The observation deck is flat and viewing is free; the Sandangiwa Cavern is a separate paid tour via elevator. Stay away from the cliff edge and view from within the railing. On windy days, hold onto hats securely. There is a gift shop and restroom near the parking lot.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 35 minutes. Visit before sunset when the horizon becomes colorful and the panorama is most striking.
