A temple with the world's oldest wooden architectural complex, said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku in 607. The Five-Story Pagoda and Golden Hall of the Western Temple Complex (西院伽藍) were registered as Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993. The temple complex, surrounded by vermillion-colored corridors, has remained virtually unchanged for over 1400 years, and simply standing in that space overwhelms you with the depth of history. The Great Treasure House (大宝蔵院) contains impressive Buddhist statues including the National Treasure Baekje Avalokiteshvara (百済観音), and the Yumedono Hall (夢殿) in the Eastern Temple Complex (東院伽藍) is also a must-see. 開催時間・打上数などの詳細は大会直前に平群町の公式発表で必ず確認してください。荒天時は中止または延期の場合があります。終了後は最寄りの近鉄生駒線の駅へ向かう人が集中するため、時差をつけての帰宅がおすすめです。足元が暗くなるので、小さなライトを持参しておくと安心です。

About 20 minutes walk from JR Yamato-ji Line Horyu-ji Station or about 5 minutes by bus. Admission is ¥1,500 per adult (valid for Western Temple Complex, Great Treasure House, and Eastern Temple Complex). The grounds are crowded with visitors in the afternoon, so it's recommended to enter the popular Treasure House early. Chugu-ji Temple is just next to the Eastern Temple Complex of Horyu-ji and only a few minutes' walk away.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The afternoon light softly illuminates the wooden grain of the Five-Story Pagoda, making it ideal for leisurely viewing.
