Leisurely Stroll Through the Lush Green Park at Tsuruoka Castle Ruins

A park for citizens' recreation established on the castle ruins of Tsuruoka Castle, governed by the Sakai family of the Shonai Domain during the Edo period. The vast grounds are surrounded by a moat and stone walls, and while known as a cherry blossom viewing spot, in summer it becomes a pleasant space with cool walking paths enveloped in deep greenery. Within the park stands Shonaijinja Shrine (庄内神社), the chief guardian shrine of the Shonai Domain, where you can offer quiet prayers. There is also a grassy lawn where children can run around, serving as warm-up exercise before heading out for afternoon activities. On the day of the fireworks festival, the park is still peaceful during the afternoon, making it an ideal time to explore at leisure.

山形県鶴岡市の赤川河畔を舞台に、毎年8月15日に開催される赤川花火大会です。約12,000発の花火が羽黒橋から三川橋の間の川上空に打ち上げられ、山形を代表する夏の大花火として多くの家族連れや観覧客が集まります。この大会の最大の特長は「競技花火」としての側面で、全国から腕利きの花火師がエントリーし、スターマインや尺玉など各演目で技を競います。花火師ごとに異なる色彩やデザインの変化を楽しみながら観覧できるのが、他の花火大会とひと味違う醍醐味です。川面に映る光と夜空に開く大輪が重なる瞬間、庄内の夏の夜は最高潮を迎えます。

Tips

有料観覧席は例年早期に完売するため、公式サイトで販売開始日を必ず確認して早めに購入してください。自由観覧エリアは無料ですが場所取りが早くなります。終演後は周辺道路が大渋滞するため、公共交通機関の利用か、時間をずらしての帰宅をおすすめします。荒天時の開催可否は大会公式の発表で確認してください。

Tips

About 15 minutes on foot from Tsuruoka Station, or about 5 minutes by car. Free admission. Since the park is spacious, wear comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to receive a goshuin (temple stamp) at Shonaijinja Shrine, check the reception hours of the shrine office in advance. While there are multiple parking lots around the park, on the day of the fireworks festival, congestion will increase from evening onward; it's reassuring to identify parking locations during the daytime.
