Experience the strange rocks and clear stream of the upper Usui River, plus the famous "flying dumplings"
About this spot
A gorge stretching approximately 2 km along the upper Usui River, designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument. The spectacular landscape—where strange rocks jutting from the riverbed, emerald-green clear waters, and lush greenery on both banks combine—is one of the representative masterpieces of Tohoku scenery. Walking along the promenade beside the gorge, you can experience the powerful sensation of the river's flow rushing close to your feet. "Flying dumplings" (空飛ぶだんご), where dumplings and beverages are delivered in baskets from the tea house across the river, is the specialty of Genbikei. The mechanism of tapping a wooden hammer on a board to place orders is hugely popular with children. This is the source area of the Usui River where tonight's fireworks will unfold, so take time to walk it thoroughly during the day.

一関夏まつりのフィナーレを飾る磐井川川開き花火大会は、磐井川の川上から打ち上がる約10,000発の花火が夜空を染め上げる東北屈指の夏の祭典です。川沿いの河川公園から見上げると花火が真上に開くような迫力があり、川面に映る光の帯が揺れる光景は川の花火大会ならではの美しさ。スターマインや大玉が次々と打ち上がるたびに歓声が上がり、最後のフィナーレでは連発の轟音が磐井川の流れに重なって、体全体に響く大迫力の幕引きとなります。今日1日、清流・厳美渓から始まった磐井川との旅の締めくくりにふさわしい、記憶に残る75分間です。
Tips
荒天時の開催可否は一関市の公式発表または大会公式情報で必ず当日確認を。終了後は会場周辺と一関駅への道が大混雑するため、フィナーレ後はその場でしばらく余韻を楽しんでから時間差で移動するのがおすすめ。帰りの電車・バスの最終時刻を事前に確認し、時間に余裕を持った行動を心がけましょう。足元が暗い河川敷の帰り道には小さなライトが役立ちます。

From Ichinoseki Station Front Bus Terminal, take the Iwate Kotsu bus for approximately 25 minutes and get off at the "Genbikei" bus stop. Since the promenade has some rocky sections, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The famous "flying dumplings" are available at Kakkou Dango Shop (郭公だんご店) on the opposite bank—prepare small change in cash for smooth transactions. Check the return bus schedule in advance.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The afternoon sunlight sparkles on the gorge's water surface, creating beautiful contrast with the greenery.
