About this spot

An approximately 800-meter arcade shopping street beginning just east of JR Onomichi Station. Local Seto Inland Sea specialties gather here—Onomichi ramen, anago-meshi (conger eel over rice), and hassaku mikan daifuku (pomelo mikan daifuku)—and simply eating and walking your way through builds the travel spirit. Shops retaining the character of the Showa era, secondhand bookstores, and miscellaneous goods shops are scattered throughout, ensuring both adults and children won't get bored. On the day of the fireworks festival, crowds increase further in the evening, so enjoying the street leisurely in the early afternoon hours is the right choice. Munch on snacks purchased from the shopping street and build anticipation for the next stop, Senkoiji.

おのみち住吉花火まつりは、住吉神社の祭礼に合わせて尾道水道の海上から打ち上げられる夏の大会で、約13,000発の花火が1時間にわたって夜空を彩ります。幅の狭い尾道水道から見上げる花火は臨場感が抜群で、打ち上げ音が港町の建物に反響して体に響く迫力も格別です。穏やかな内海の水面に映える逆さ花火は、瀬戸内の花火大会ならではの美しさ。対岸の向島をバックに次々と開く大輪は、昼間ロープウェイから眺めた同じ海とは思えない別世界の光景です。住吉神社の祭りのにぎわいとともに、夏の尾道の夜を満喫しましょう。

Tips

荒天時の開催可否は大会公式発表で確認を。終了後は会場周辺と尾道駅へ向かう道が大変混み合います。フィナーレ後はその場で少し余韻を楽しんでから動き出す時間差帰宅がおすすめです。JR尾道駅のほか、会場から徒歩圏内の複数の出口を事前に確認しておくと混雑時に役立ちます。足元が暗いのでスマホのライトで安全に移動を。

Tips

About 3 minutes on foot from JR Onomichi Station. The arcade offers shade from the sun, making it relatively comfortable even during midday summer heat. If you purchase souvenirs here, store them in a coin locker so you can move about light-footed until evening. Note that lockers at the station become full early on the fireworks festival day, so secure one right after arrival.
