Yatsushiro Castle (八代城), said to have been built by Kato Kiyomasa (加藤清正), is also known by the alias "White Heron Castle" (白鷺城). The stone walls and water moats that convey the appearance of the past remain in good condition today. The castle ruins are maintained as a free public park, and even a walk along the moat conveys the atmosphere of an Edo-period castle town. The site is also designated as a national historic monument and serves as an ideal starting point for Yatsushiro tourism, cherished by local residents. Looking up at the blue sky beyond the stone walls amid the clear October air heightens anticipation for the evening's fireworks all the more.

やつしろ全国花火競技大会は、全国から選ばれた花火師たちが技を競う本格的な競技大会で、約14,000発という圧倒的な打上数を誇る九州を代表する花火大会のひとつです。スターマインや10号玉など多彩な種目で競われる花火は、どれも完成度が高く、間近の球磨川の水面に映る光も格別の美しさです。秋ならではの澄んだ夜空に大輪が次々と開く2時間30分、川風とともに楽しむ競技花火の迫力は、夏とは一味違う凜とした感動をもたらしてくれます。フィナーレの連発では夜空全体が光に包まれ、1日の旅のクライマックスにふさわしい圧巻の光景が広がります。

Tips

荒天・増水時は中止または延期となるため、開催可否は大会公式サイトや八代市の案内で当日朝に確認してください。終了後の周辺道路と駐車場は大変混雑します。公共交通機関を利用する場合は帰りのバス・電車の時刻を事前に調べ、フィナーレ後は少し時間をおいてから移動するのがおすすめです。10月の夜は気温が下がるので、防寒着を必ず着込んでから観覧しましょう。

Tips

Approximately 15 minutes on foot from JR Yatsushiro Station (JR八代駅), or about 5 minutes by car. Free admission and open at all times. The area around the moat is fitted with paved walking paths, making it easy to navigate even with strollers or small children. You can easily walk to the adjacent museum.
