About this spot
A mountain castle built in 1575 by Kanamori Nagachika, standing on the summit of Kameyama at 249 meters elevation. From autumn to winter, it is called the "Castle in the Sky" for its fantastical appearance floating in clouds, a name that has become widely known in recent years. Even on a summer climb, from the castle keep reached after a 20-30 minute walk up the stone-paved castle path, a vast panorama unfolds showing the checkerboard-pattern castle town of Echizen Oono and the mountain ranges surrounding the basin. You can also see the Nakaho area where tonight's fireworks will launch, making this a fitting starting point for the day's story. Though modest in size, the interior of the castle keep has a well-equipped collection of historical materials.

おおの城まつりのクライマックスを飾る大花火大会で、大野市中保の会場から約3,000発が打ち上がります。越前大野は四方を山に囲まれた盆地のため、花火の音が山々にこだまして体の芯まで響く迫力は格別です。夜空に大きく開く尺玉や、連続して広がるスターマインが盆地の空を埋め尽くし、夏の越前大野の夜を一夜限りの光で染め上げます。城まつりの祭り囃子や地域の熱気とともに楽しむ花火は、都市部の大会とはひと味違う、山里の夏祭りならではの温かさがあります。

開催時間は大会公式の発表を必ず事前に確認してください。荒天時の開催可否も公式発表に従いましょう。終了後は会場周辺の道路が混雑するため、終演後はすぐに移動せずしばらく余韻を楽しんでから帰路につくと混雑を避けやすいです。JR越美北線の帰りの便は本数が少ないため、時刻表の確認を忘れずに。足元が暗いのでスマホのライトを活用してください。

Located in the center of Oono City, about 20-30 minutes on foot from the castle town base via the castle path. Admission for adults is 300 yen. In summer, while there are trees that provide shade along the path, it is recommended to bring drinks and stay hydrated during the climb. Some sections of the path are unpaved, so wear comfortable shoes. Check the official website for opening hours before you depart.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Late morning to early afternoon offers good visibility and clear mountain views.
