Built in 1625 by Shigeyoshi Matsukura (松倉重政), this is the symbol of Shimabara. The beautifully white five-story castle keep is a reconstruction, and its interior functions as a museum displaying historical materials related to the Shimabara Rebellion and samurai armor. Climbing to the top floor of the keep reveals a grand panorama: the blue waters of Ariake Sea in the foreground, Unzen Fugendake looming directly ahead, and Shimabara Harbor—tonight's fireworks venue—spread below. The castle moat blooms with lotuses, and lush green summer foliage creates a pleasant walking path. It's the perfect starting point to savor the daytime atmosphere of the castle town while building anticipation for tonight's fireworks.

Tips

Approximately 7 minutes on foot from Shimabara Station, or approximately 15 minutes on foot from Shimabara Harbor. Admission is 700 yen for adults. The stairs inside the keep are steep, so hold small children's hands when climbing. The top floor offers excellent views but can be windy. The castle ruins park is free to explore, and shaded areas along the moat are ideal for resting.
