Climb Horse's Back at Japan's Largest Sand Dunes and Gaze Upon the Japan Sea
About this spot
Spanning 2.4 km north-south and 16 km east-west, these are Japan's largest sand dunes and are designated as a National Natural Monument. When you reach the peak of the ridge called "Horse's Back" (the symbol of the sand dunes), the azure Japan Sea spreads out below, evoking an exclamation from every visitor. Natural phenomena such as "sand ripples" created by wind and "oases" formed by rainwater change with the seasons and times of day. Children can freely enjoy racing down the sandy slopes and playing in the sand. Near the entrance to the dunes are shops and rest areas, and camel rides are also a popular activity.

鳥取砂丘こどもの国 夏まつりのフィナーレを飾る花火大会で、2026年8月23日(日)20時から打ち上げが始まります。鳥取砂丘に隣接した広大な公園から見上げる花火は、周囲に高い建物がなく視界が開けているため、空の広さをめいっぱい使った花火の大輪が楽しめます。夏まつりの屋台の賑わいが続く中、子どもから大人まで歓声をあげながら見上げる花火は、鳥取の夏の風物詩です。海に近い砂丘のそばという立地ならではの、潮風とともに楽しむ花火の時間は夏の忘れられない思い出になります。
Tips
開催可否は荒天時など状況により変わる場合があるため、当日は主催者の公式発表を確認してください。終了後は駐車場から出る車で周辺道路が混雑しやすいため、終了後すぐに移動するより少し余韻を楽しんでから帰るとスムーズです。帰路は足元が暗くなるためスマートフォンのライトを活用してください。
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from central Tottori, and the nearest bus stop (Sand Dune Center bus stop) is also accessible by public transport. Entry is free, but the sun is very strong on the dunes, so hats, sunglasses, and water are essential. Sandals and heels will sink in the sand, so comfortable sneakers are a must. The steep slope of Horse's Back requires physical stamina, so avoid overexertion during hot daytime hours and drink water frequently.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Mid-morning to early afternoon is relatively cool, and sand ripples remain clearly visible in the wind during these hours.
