Spectacular View: Akashi Kaikyo Bridge from Directly Below, Plus Morning Seafood Market
About this spot
A service station located at the foot of the Awaji Island side of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, its greatest charm is the spectacular view of the world's largest suspension bridge spanning approximately 4 kilometers, seen from directly below. The scale of the bridge is so impressive that photographs cannot fully convey it—children will surely let out exclamations of wonder. Inside the facility, there are shops and a cafeteria selling Awaji Island's fresh seafood, where you can enjoy island cuisine from morning, such as raw whitebait rice bowls and seafood rice bowls. Awaji Island onions and seafood souvenirs are also well-stocked, making this a spot where you can feel the atmosphere of the island right from the start of your trip. The view of the bridge and passing ships across the strait from the waterside garden is such a spectacular sight that you'll want to take countless photographs.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Awaji IC on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway; parking is free. The cafeteria gets crowded during lunch hours, so visiting early in the morning ensures a smooth experience. To capture the full bridge in a photo, head to the waterside behind the building. The grounds are flat and easy to navigate with a stroller, but bring a jacket if it's a windy day.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. It's least crowded right after opening in the morning, and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge looks most beautiful in the morning light.
