Enter as the gates open. Climb the grand main keep of the White Heron Castle and enjoy a panoramic view of the castle town
About this spot
Japan's representative castle registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and National Treasure, beloved by the nickname 'White Heron Castle' for its beautiful appearance with white plaster. The grand main keep, standing since the early Edo period, offers an authentic castle experience as you remove your shoes and climb steep wooden stairs. From the top floor, you can see Himeji's entire castle town spread before you, and the exhilarating feeling of retracing your path with family is incomparable. Walking while searching for defensive features—the maze-like gates, stone walls, and narrow openings called 'samekushi'—keeps children engaged in an adventure mindset. The white main keep, changing its appearance with each season—cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and snow—is a World Heritage site that history-loving families will want to visit at least once, always offering new discoveries with each visit.
Tips
From JR Himeji Station (姫路駅), walk straight down Otemae Avenue for about 20 minutes, or take the Shinki Bus from the station and get off at 'Otemon-mae' (大手門前). During cherry blossom season and major holidays, queues form; entering right after the gates open ensures comfort. Since you must remove shoes and climb steep stairs in the main keep, slip-on shoes and socks are recommended. A baby carrier is helpful as stroller viewing is difficult. Purchasing a combined ticket with adjacent Koko-en Garden is more economical.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours. The morning right after opening is less crowded and the main keep stairs are easier to navigate
