This distillery was opened by Masataka Taketsuru, known as "the Father of Japanese Whisky," in Yoichi after he discovered a cool climate and high-quality water reminiscent of Scotland. The grounds are dotted with distinctive red-roofed kiln towers and stone buildings that are picturesque to walk through, with several structures designated as National Important Cultural Properties. In the distilling plant, which still guards the rare worldwide practice of coal-fired direct heating, you may encounter craftsmen stoking the coal. At the Whisky Museum, you can trace the history and production methods of Yoichi Malt, and the tour concludes with complimentary tastings (non-alcoholic drinks for drivers). The gift shop also carries exclusive distillery-only bottles, perfect for finding souvenirs for whisky enthusiasts.

Tips

About a 3-minute walk from JR Yoichi Station, or use the dedicated parking lot if driving. The distillery tour is free but requires advance reservation through the official website—don't forget to book. At the tasting counter, drivers and those under 20 must have non-alcoholic drinks. Drunk driving is strictly prohibited.
