World-renowned Jellyfish Exhibit: "Jellyfish Dream Hall" with Its Spectacular Large Tank

About this spot

Known affectionately as "Jellyfish Dream Hall," this aquarium is renowned worldwide for its jellyfish exhibits. The facility displays dozens of jellyfish species year-round, with its variety ranking among the world's top-tier collections. The highlight is the circular large tank "Jellyfish Dream Theater" with a diameter of 5 meters, where countless moon jellyfish drift gently in blue light—a sight like a living planetarium. Most tanks are at heights visible to young children, and you can walk through the entire facility with a stroller, which is a great convenience. Beyond jellyfish, the aquarium also features exhibits of fish that inhabit the rivers and seas of Shonai, outdoor sea lion shows, and other engaging attractions. The in-facility restaurant serves specialty dishes made with jellyfish, making it ideal to stop by for an early lunch.

Tips

About 30 minutes by car from JR Tsuruoka Station; a short walk from the Shonai Kotsutsu bus stop "Kamo Aquarium." Free parking is available, though arriving right after opening is recommended during summer holidays and holiday periods. The facility has elevators and is easy to navigate with a stroller. It is equipped with nursing rooms and diaper-changing facilities.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 2.5 hours. Late morning, right after opening, is relatively uncrowded, allowing you to stake out a spot near the large tank.
