Climb the National Treasure keep and enjoy views of castle-town Matsue

About this spot

Matsue Castle's keep, a symbol of Matsue and designated as a National Treasure. The black keep rising above stone walls surrounded by a moat is one of 12 existing castles nationwide. Climbing the steep interior stairs affords sweeping views across Matsue City to Lake Shinji (宍道湖). The interior also features exhibits about successive feudal lords, offering a chance for families to engage with history. Visiting in the cool morning hours before heading to the pool allows for relatively unhurried viewing in summer.

Tips

Inside the keep, you must remove your shoes to climb the stairs, so easy-on-easy-off footwear is recommended. The surrounding area has a Horikawa Sightseeing Boat (堀川めぐり) boarding area, so if you have time, you can enjoy that as well. The Ōtemae Parking Lot (大手前駐車場) and similar facilities are convenient for parking.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Morning is coolest and most comfortable for walking before temperatures rise.
