Pray for your family's health at the 23rd temple of the Shikoku pilgrimage

About this spot

An old temple known as the 23rd site of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, long cherished as a temple for warding off misfortune. The stone steps leading to the grounds are called the women's unlucky-year steps (女厄坂) and the men's unlucky-year steps (男厄坂), and tradition holds that placing a one-yen coin on each step as you climb wards off bad luck, which makes for an enjoyable visit with children. From the Yugito Pagoda (瑜祇塔) on the high ground you can look out over the streets of Hiwasa (日和佐) and the sea, building anticipation for the beach ahead. The grounds have plenty of shade and stay relatively comfortable even on a summer morning.
