Visit Echigo's First Shrine and Walk Through the Sacred Cedar Grove

Affectionately known as "Oyahiko-sama," this ancient shrine is revered as Echigo's first shrine with Yahiko Mountain as its sacred deity. The approach from the large torii gate is enveloped in towering cedar trees, creating a solemn atmosphere. Beyond the sacred gate lies an impressive worship hall that draws many visitors. Within the grounds are several points of interest, including the Kiku-en (Chrysanthemum Garden) famous for its festival and a sacred horse stable, offering plenty to explore at a leisurely pace.

弥彦神社の夏を締めくくる燈籠まつりの奉納花火大会です。会場の弥彦公園には約250発の花火が打ち上がり、神社の杜と一体になった厳かで美しい光景が広がります。20時から22時までと開催時間が長く、家族でゆったり最後まで楽しめるのも魅力です。昼間に訪れた神社や公園の景色が、夜には花火とともにまったく違う表情を見せてくれます。
Tips
荒天時は中止または延期となる場合があるため、当日の開催可否は弥彦村の公式発表で確認しましょう。終了後は温泉街や駅周辺が大変混み合います。足元が暗くなるので、小さな子ども連れは懐中電灯があると安心です。

About 15 minutes walk from JR Yahiko Station. Admission is free. In summer, there are few shaded areas along the path, so remember to stay hydrated during hot hours. The adjacent Yahiko Park is just a short walk from the shrine grounds.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. Early morning hours offer a relatively calm atmosphere for visiting.
