A National Treasure and one of Japan's oldest existing five-story, six-floor keeps, it's also affectionately known as the "Crow Castle" for its striking contrast between black-lacquered planking and white plaster walls. The composition of the red-lacquered arched bridge, the keep, and the Northern Alps reflected in the moat is Matsumoto's quintessential scenic view. Inside the keep, you can closely examine thick beams and gun ports—evidence of Sengoku-era defenses—and from the top floor, you can survey the castle town and mountain ranges. The keep grounds also feature elegant buildings like the Moon-Viewing Turret, and history enthusiasts will find themselves losing track of time in this renowned castle.

Tips

The keep's interior has steep and narrow staircases; wear comfortable walking shoes. Strollers should be checked at the keep entrance and babies should be carried for viewing. During holidays and cherry blossom season, expect waiting times at the keep entrance, so arriving right after opening is more comfortable. The benches in the Honmaru Garden are perfect for resting while viewing the keep.
