A Couple's Pilgrimage Climb to Nageire-do, a National Treasure Enshrined in a Cliff Grotto
About this spot
An ancient temple with halls nestled on the mountainside of Mitoku Mountain (三徳山), a sacred site of mountain ascetic practice. The temple's inner sanctuary, Nageire-do, is a National Treasure built within a cliff grotto. According to legend, a mountain priest used miraculous power to toss the hall into the cliff from below. This suspended-style structure is said to be Japan's most perilous National Treasure to visit, lying at the end of a mountain path. The route features the vine-covered slope where you grasp wooden roots and the chain slope where you cling to iron chains—challenging sections that test your resolve. However, solo entry is forbidden, so the true essence of this pilgrimage lies in helping each other as you climb together. Viewed from the end of the mountain path, Nageire-do appears mystical, as if floating on the cliff. Those lacking confidence can also view it from the viewing pavilion at the base.
Tips
The entrance station checks your shoes and clothing; if your footwear is slippery, you may need to rent straw sandals (fee applies). A backpack that keeps both hands free and work gloves are invaluable. During rain or adverse conditions, entry is restricted; in such cases, switch to viewing from the base pavilion. Parking is available near the entrance to the temple path.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes required. The mountain path is relatively uncrowded in the morning, and the time when sunlight filters through the trees is especially serene and sacred.
