Ancient Mountain Worship Temple – Pay Your Respects to the Treasure Ox That Grants Wishes
About this spot
An ancient Tendai Buddhist temple that has long flourished as a sacred site for mountain worship. In its heyday, it housed numerous monastery buildings and reached such prominence that its glory is said to rival that of Mount Koya and Mount Hiei. After quietly clasping your hands in prayer at the main hall reached via stone steps, take a leisurely stroll around the temple grounds. The statue known as the Treasure Ox (宝牛), believed to grant a single wish to those who stroke it with sincere intent, is a popular spot. Because it sits adjacent to the approach trail of Daijin Mountain Shrine's inner sanctuary, you can enjoy visits to both sites in one experience. Enveloped in deep greenery, the temple architecture evokes the solemn atmosphere unique to a mountain temple.
Tips
A voluntary donation (shinnoukin) is requested for worship. Since it adjoins the stone path approach to Daijin Mountain Shrine's inner sanctuary, visiting on the way back from the shrine creates a smooth flow. Stone steps continue, so remain in comfortable footwear. If you wish to receive a temple stamp, confirm the reception location in advance.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes required. Late-morning hours see few tour groups, allowing you to pray peacefully at the main hall.
