Begin Your Day with Morning Prayer at the World Heritage Site on the Banks of the Motoyasu River
About this spot
Originally built as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, this Western-style building was designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel. Having survived the devastation of the atomic bomb, its iron-reinforced dome and crumbled walls stand as a witness that transcends words, conveying the horror of nuclear weapons and the preciousness of peace—and are registered as a World Cultural Heritage site. While you cannot enter the interior, you can slowly walk around the building's perimeter and view it from various angles through the river and fences. Viewing its reflection in the Motoyasu River from the opposite bank is also recommended. As the starting point of a prayer-filled walking tour, it's a place where you'll want to offer your respects in the quiet of the morning.
Tips
Just a short walk from Genbaku Dome Mae (原爆ドーム前) streetcar stop. Early morning hours before tour buses arrive are quietest for viewing. Dome viewing is only from the outer perimeter; following the signage and monuments around the full loop deepens understanding.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. The quiet morning hours allow peaceful prayer, and the reflection in the river is particularly beautiful.
